[HOW TO] GLOVE MAINTENANCE TIPS

How to wash motorcycle gloves? Here is Simple & Easy Care for Your Riding Gloves

When you are out on the road, your gloves are one of the most important contact points between you and your motorcycle. A good pair of riding gloves is designed to provide grip, comfort, feel, and protection, often using a combination of leather, synthetic materials, protectors, and technical fabrics.

However, Malaysia’s tropical heat, humidity, sweat, rain, and strong sunlight can be tough on motorcycle gear. Without proper care, even a high-quality pair of gloves can become stiff, lose comfort, or wear out earlier than expected.

With a few simple habits, you can help extend the life of your gloves and keep them comfortable for every ride.

Why Glove Care Matters

Gloves are exposed to sweat and skin oils more than most riding gear. Over time, salt from sweat can dry out leather, make materials stiff, and reduce comfort.

When gloves become too stiff, they are not just uncomfortable. They may also reduce your hand movement, throttle control, braking feel, and overall riding comfort.

Regular maintenance is not just about keeping your gloves clean. It is also about preserving fit, comfort, and performance.

Daily Habits After Every Ride

You do not need special tools for daily care. A few small habits make a big difference.

Let them breathe: After a ride, do not stuff sweaty gloves inside your helmet, bag, or top case. Trapped heat and moisture can create odors and may encourage mold or bacterial growth. Let the gloves air out in a well-ventilated area.

Avoid direct sunlight: Drying gloves under strong sunlight may seem convenient, but heat and UV exposure can dry out leather and damage materials over time. Always dry them in the shade.

Do not leave them wet: If your gloves are soaked by rain, do not leave them in a pile overnight. Open them up, reshape them gently, and let them dry naturally.

How to Wash Your Gloves Correctly

When your gloves start to smell or feel dirty, wash them carefully by hand.

(Step-1) Hand wash only
Never use a washing machine. Use lukewarm or room-temperature water under 30°C and a small amount of pH-neutral soap*.

*If using household products, choose a mild dish detergent or laundry detergent that is clearly labeled as pH-neutral. Specialized leather soap may also be used.

(Step-2) Rinse thoroughly
Soap residue can cause stiffness, marks, or discomfort. Rinse carefully with clean water until no soap remains.

(Step-3) Do not twist or wring
Never twist your gloves to remove water. This can damage the shape, stitching, leather, fabrics, and protective parts. Instead, place them between dry towels and press gently to absorb excess water.

(Step-4) Reshape and air dry
Reshape the gloves while they are still damp, then let them dry naturally in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

(Step-5) The fit tip
When the gloves are almost dry but still slightly damp, wear them and gently open and close your hands a few times. This helps the gloves keep their natural shape around your hands.

What to Avoid

To protect your gloves, avoid the following:

No washing machines or dryers
The mechanical action and heat can damage stitching, leather, fabrics, and protective components.

No bleach or harsh chemicals
Bleach and strong cleaners can damage fibers, weaken materials, and ruin the color.

No ironing
High heat can damage leather, synthetic fabrics, and protective components.

No direct heat
Do not dry gloves with a hair dryer, heater, or strong direct sunlight. Let them dry naturally.

Do not leave them wet
If your gloves get soaked in heavy rain, do not leave them wet in a bag, helmet, or top case. Dry them properly as soon as possible to reduce odor, stiffness, and mold risk.
